The vent above your water heater is designed to take the exhaust from heating water and move it out of your home. If you see melted plastic around the top of your water heater, this is an indicator that your system may be back-drafting, pulling heat and carbon monoxide back into your home instead of venting it out.
This is just one small way an energy audit can make your home safer and more energy efficient. Sign up for your $100 energy audit by March 31 at www.MiHomeEnergy.org.
Don’t get left out in the cold! A home energy audit can help you identify where cold air is getting into your house and find easy fixes to help you save energy, save money, and keep warm and cozy!
I wanted to make you aware of a unique opportunity to save energy… and save money on utility bills.
It’s called BetterBuildings for Michigan–a federal grant program that offers a professional energy audit plus CFL lightbulbs, a programmable thermostat and a water-saving shower head all for $100. The cost of the equipment alone is over $150, and the energy audit gives you a clear roadmap showing how to save energy.
You’ll get a list of recommended improvements and estimates of how long it’ll take for those upgrades to pay for themselves. BetterBuildings for Michigan also offers thousands of dollars in rebates to help you make any energy efficient improvements you choose. Participants are saving an average of $580 per year.
This program is available to anyone in a participating city who lives in a single-family home, regardless of income (although there is also a free program for lower-income folks). See if your city is included!
Here is the catch (the only catch, I promise.) The program ends March 31. Sign up at www.MiHomeEnergy.org or call 313-566-4801.

Time to tackle your winter heating bills!
Imagine having a football-sized hole in your front door all winter long. You’d spend a fortune on heat, and your house would still be chilly! BetterBuildings for Michigan can help you tackle this problem—and your energy bills.
Most Michigan residents spend $300 per year or more on energy that leaks out of their home. For just $100, you can get a home energy audit that uses special technology to find the tiny cracks in your house that can add up to a hole the size of a football or even a basketball! Your energy audit will identify small fixes that can add up to big savings.
If you have a bigger project in mind like adding insulation or replacing a furnace, BetterBuildings for Michigan can help make it affordable by providing up to $3,000 in rebates.
This grant-funded offer ends March 31, 2012. Visit www.mihomeenergy.org or call 313.566.4801 for details.
Does your house have…
Chilly drafts? Creaky windows? Flickering lights?
Your house isn’t haunted, it just feels that way.
Most people don’t realize that small repairs can make a big difference in how comfortable their home feels. If the chilly weather has you reaching for the blankets, it might be time for a home energy audit from BetterBuildings for Michigan.
Our team uses high-tech equipment to find all the invisible places where air leaks into your house, causing drafts and raising your heating bills. They also install new CFL lightbulbs, faucet aerators and a programmable thermostat. The audit costs $100 and the average homeowner saves $235 per year—making your energy bills a whole lot less scary.
If you have a bigger project in mind like adding insulation or replacing a furnace, BetterBuildings for Michigan can help make it affordable by providing 0% financing or up to $3,000 in rebates.
